What gothic text is and where it comes from in Unicode

Gothic text, also called blackletter or Old English, is the dense, angular lettering known from medieval manuscripts, old newspaper headings and certificates. This page gives you three versions: fraktur, bold fraktur, and a decorated gothic style with extra ornamental touches. They look like a font change, but nothing is installed or downloaded, and the people who see your text do not need any special font file.

Behind the scenes, fraktur and bold fraktur come from the Mathematical Alphanumeric Symbols block in Unicode, which includes complete fraktur alphabets originally meant for mathematics. Each styled letter is its own character, not a normal letter with a font applied. That is why you can paste it into a bio or comment and it keeps its shape. Only the letters A–Z are converted. Punctuation, accented letters and other alphabets stay as they were.

Where to use gothic text

Gothic letters suit anything with a dark, old-world or dramatic mood. Try a band or gaming clan name in a bio, a headline word in an Instagram caption, a tattoo-style quote, a Halloween party invitation, or a fantasy character name on a Discord server. An Instagram bio allows 150 characters, so one fraktur word as a headline with plain text underneath works well. A Discord nickname is limited to 32 characters, and an X (Twitter) display name to 50.

Use the styles in small doses. A name or a single line looks striking, while a whole paragraph of blackletter is tiring to read. Bold fraktur has heavier strokes, so it is often easier to read at small sizes, while regular fraktur looks lighter and more delicate. Account names are a different matter. Facebook profile names, Epic/Fortnite display names and some game nicknames may reject these characters, so test first, or put the styled text in your bio, posts and comments instead.

Tips and limitations

Blackletter is hard to read even in a proper font, and these are special characters on top of that. On older devices or in apps with limited fonts, some letters may appear as empty boxes. Screen readers often read these characters badly, or skip them. Treat gothic text as decoration only. Do not use it for phone numbers, addresses, prices, links or anything else people must understand.

Before you publish, paste your text where you plan to use it and check it on both a phone and a computer. Keep the styled part short, and put the plain-text version of important words nearby. Because styled letters are different characters from ordinary ones, someone searching for your name in normal letters may not find a profile or post written in fraktur.

Frequently asked questions

Is gothic text a real font?

No. These are Unicode characters that happen to look like blackletter lettering. Nothing is downloaded or installed, and you can paste them wherever the app or website accepts ordinary text, without choosing a font.

What is the difference between fraktur, bold fraktur and decorated gothic?

Fraktur is the standard blackletter look with thinner strokes. Bold fraktur uses the same letter shapes with heavier strokes. Decorated gothic adds ornamental touches to the gothic look. Type a word and compare all three side by side.

Why do I see empty boxes instead of letters?

Some older devices and apps with limited fonts cannot display every Unicode character, so they show boxes. If that happens, switch to another style or use plain text. It helps to test your text before posting.

Can I use gothic text for my Facebook or Fortnite name?

Often not. Facebook profile names, Epic/Fortnite display names and some game nicknames may reject special characters. Try it first to see if it is accepted, or use gothic text in your bio, posts and comments instead.
