How to use the underline text generator

  1. Type or paste your text into the box. Every underline style updates instantly as you type, so you can compare them side by side.
  2. Find the style you like: single, double, dotted or wavy underline, overline, or underline combined with bold, italic or script. Press "Copy" next to it.
  3. Paste the result into your bio, post, comment, chat or note. It works in any app that accepts plain text, so test it once before you rely on it.

What underlined text is made of

When you underline text in a word processor, the program stores a formatting instruction. Plain-text boxes such as bios, comments and chat messages have nowhere to keep that instruction, so the underline disappears when you paste. This generator takes a different route. It adds a Unicode combining mark after each letter. A combining mark is a special character with no width of its own that draws a line under or over the letter before it. Single, double, dotted and wavy underline and the overline are simply different marks.

The bold, italic and script versions work in two steps. First, each letter from A to Z is swapped for its look-alike from the mathematical alphanumeric symbols, letter shapes originally designed for math notation. Then the underline mark is added on top. None of this is a font file. Nothing is downloaded or installed, and the conversion happens in your browser as you type. Characters other than A–Z, such as accented letters or punctuation, stay exactly as you typed them.

Where to use underlined text

Underlined text helps when you want one word to stand out in a place that offers no formatting. In an Instagram bio, which allows 150 characters, you might underline a single keyword such as a city or a job title. In a Discord nickname (32 characters) or an X display name (50 characters), a wavy or dotted line can make a short name look distinct. In captions and comments, a double underline can mark a heading or an important date.

Here are a few more ideas. Underline a title in a plain-text note or message so it reads like a heading. Use a dotted line to mark a word you want friends to guess or correct in a game post. Try underlined bold for a short call to action in a caption. Be careful with account names: Facebook profile names, Epic and Fortnite display names, and some game nicknames may reject special characters. Test a name first, or put the styled text in a bio, post or comment instead.

Tips and limitations

Use these styles sparingly. One or two underlined words stand out, but a whole paragraph is hard to read because the lines run together and the letters look crowded. Underlined text also looks like a link to many readers, so avoid it where people might try to tap it. Each marked letter is really two characters, the letter and the mark, so a short phrase can use more of a character limit than you expect. Check the counter in the app before you post.

Support varies from one device to another. On older devices or in apps with limited fonts, some marks may show as empty boxes, or the line may sit slightly off or overlap the neighboring letters. Wavy and dotted lines in particular can look different from app to app. Screen readers often read these characters badly, so keep phone numbers, addresses, prices and instructions in plain text and use these styles only for decoration. Paste a sample where you plan to use it before you commit.

Frequently asked questions

Is this the same as underlining in Word or Google Docs?

No. Word processors apply a formatting setting to the text. This tool adds Unicode combining characters that draw a line next to each letter, so the underline travels with the text when you paste it into plain-text fields.

Can I underline bold, italic or script text?

Yes. The generator offers underline combined with bold, italic and script letters. It first converts A–Z to the chosen letter style, then adds the underline mark. Other characters, like punctuation or accented letters, stay unchanged.

Why does the line look uneven or show empty boxes?

How a combining mark is drawn depends on the device, app and font. Older devices or apps with limited fonts may show empty boxes, or place the line slightly off. Try another style, or paste a short test into the app first.

Can I use underlined text in my username or profile name?

It depends on the platform. Facebook profile names, Epic and Fortnite display names and some game nicknames may reject special characters. Bios, posts and comments are safer. For Discord (32 characters) and X (50), remember that each mark may count as a character.
